Dear Parents,
The Christmas party is planned for Dec. 18 from 8:30 – 9:30. The students have drawn names and have made a list of what they would prefer for Christmas. Please spend no more than $10-$15 on the gift. I have decided to take up money for a needy family, so please bring $5 or more for this by next week. If you would like to provide food for the party, see the bottom of this letter. Please let me know if your child will be out of town Dec. 18 or would not like to participate, so that we can make arrangements. Also, please do not bring friend gifts or boyfriend/ girlfriend gifts, this causes too much trouble and we do not want anyone’s feelings hurt. You can exchange somewhere other than school. PE Floor Hockey

Game Plan: The object of the game is to hit the puck into the opponent's goal
Team Members: A typical team has 6 players:1 goalie, 1 center, 2 forwards, 2 guards
(One) Goalie: Protector of the goal. The goalie can use their hands, feet, or stick to stop shots coming into the goal area. If a goalie catches a puck, they must throw it to the side of the goal box, NOT forward or toward the opponents goal.
(One) Center: A player who may travel the entire court playing offense and defense.
(Two) Guards: A defensive player who tries to keep the puck out of their defensive area. These players can not go across the center line or the middle line of their areas.
(Two) Forwards: An offensive player who works with their center in csoring goals. Tey may not cross the center line or the middle line in their areas.
Face-off: In a face-off, tow opposing centers face each other, holding their sticks on the floor. As the puck is dropped between them, they try to gain control of the puck by passing it to an offensive player on their team. A face-off at the middle of the centerline begins the game; and after each goal is scored.
The game: Hockey is a continuous game in which the offense and defense players battle for control of the puck, trying to advance it to the opponent's goal to score.
Basic Rules:
When a puck goes out of bounds, the last team that contacted it loses possession.
All players may stop the puck with their hands but may not hold, pass, or throw it.
The puck must precede offensive players across the centerline.
Players must keep their sticks BELOW the waist.
Players must avoid all body contact with opponents.
Each goal is scored as one point.

Field Trip Info

Dear Parents,
I have planned a field trip on Wednesday, February 18 for the fifth and sixth graders to go to Old Alabama Town in Montgomery. I need several parents to drive for this field trip. Due to so many students in these grades, the parents will be on a separate tour, which I have been assured that it is wonderful. The deal is that if you go as a chaperone, you must go on the tour and you must come home at the same time as everyone else with all the children you took up there. The children that ride up there with you will be the children that ride home with you. The cost of the chaperone tour is $13, which needs to be turned in by February 6. The students will need to bring $7 for the tour, money to eat lunch, and money for the gift shop. The $7 for the tour is due by Friday, February 6. We are planning on loading the cars at 7:45. It is very important that you have your child at the school by 7:30. I know this is early but we have to be in downtown Montgomery by 9:00. We will be eating at Eastdale Mall Food Court, but there will be no walking around or shopping. We plan on being back at PLAS around 2:00. Dress appropriately and comfortably as the tour is primarily outside. If you are interested in chaperoning for the field trip, please fill in the bottom of the page, and I will provide you with more information about the field trip.

PE Basketball Notes

Scoring:
-2 point field goal- a shot made from anywhere during play insided the 3 pt. arc.
-3 point field goal- a shot made from anywhere outside the 3 pt. arc
- Free throw- 1 point is awarded to an unguarded shot taken from behind the free throw line while the clock is stopped.

Skills:
- Dribbling-bouncing the ball with 1 hand using your fingertips instead of your palm so that it rebounds back to yourself.(the only legal way to move the ball)
-Passing-moving the ball by throwing, bouncing, handing, or rolling it to another player (Chest, bounce, lob)
-Shooting-throwing the ball to make a basket.
-Rebounding-The revcovering of a shot that bounces off the backboard or the rim.

Fouls: results in one or more free throws awarded to the opposing team.

Violations:
-Traveling: moving illegally with the ball
-Double dribble- a player dribbles the ball with both hands at the same time or they stop and then start dribbling again.

Terms:
-Air ball- a shot completely miss the rim and the backboard
-Defense-team trying to stop the other team fro scoring
- Offense- team trying to score

Pretzel recipe

1 bag of pretzels
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. dill
1 tsp. lemon pepper
1 package of dry ranch
1 cup of oil

pour pretzels into gallon bag, mix other 5 ingredients and pour onto pretzels. shake pretzels so that the mix is spread evenly. Keep in bag for several hours turning it back and forth every 30 minutes so that it doesn't settle on one side. Pour into a different bag and Enjoy!

Election Unit

For the next three weeks, the History classes will be working on an Election Unit. Throughout this process, they will learn about the History of Elections all the way to the election process. They will be split into groups where they will create a speech, commercial, poster, and other activities for their class president candidate, which they will be graded as a group. Individually, they will be tested on the material we talk about, their group participation, and their *“Become a President” project. I hope this will be a fun and educational way to understand the Presidential Election.

* “Become a President” Individual project:
The students will do a 1 page (14 font) report on a President of the past, in which they will present to the class. The research and report is to be done at home. The report just needs to have interesting facts and information about the president of choice. I would like the students to have a visual aide for their President of choice. (Either a poster with pictures and facts and/or dress as the president of choice) These presentations will be given Nov. 4-7 in their scheduled History class. The students will know in plenty of time when they will present their report. The students will be graded on their presentation, along with their outline, for a test grade. The grade outline is in the back of the packet. Note: PLEASE DO NOT WRITE ON OR TAKE OUT ANYTHING (unless I give you permission). Do not stress about this project, I will not be grading hard! Andy Warhol Field Trip

We are excited to take part in a field trip to the world renowned Andy Warhol exhibit at the Troy Cultural Arts Center. The 6th grade will be going Wednesday,October 8th from 1:00-2:00. We will be loading cars at 12:40. Following the visit to the museum, we will go to Byrd's Drugs for a snack. Please send money with your child for the snack. We will need drivers for the day of the trip. Please let me know if you are available to transport students to and from the school. If you are able to drive I will need a copy of your drivers license, and car insurance. Students, please dress appropriately for the field trip.

Grandparent's Day

Dear Parents,
Grandparent’s Day is scheduled for Friday, October 3rd for grades K4-6th in the Cafetorium. This is a time for the children to invite a grandparent, godparent, or a special visitor.
Unfortunately, we do not have space for our parents to attend this program. The first program will be at 9:30 for K4-4th. The second program at 10:30 will follow a intermission and will consist of the 5th and 6th graders. The grandparents of these students will meet in the cafetorium and may visit the book fair following the program.
Students may check out with their special visitor but the teachers will be on campus until 3:15. Checking out is NOT a requirement.

After today, I will not be sending any worksheets, that are for classwork, home with my students. I have had students taking them home and getting help from their parents. Several parents are even writing the answers for them! These students are at the age that they are capable of doing it themselves. These worksheets are CLASSWORK not Homework! I rarely give homework, and I give them plenty of time in class to finish their work. The sheets are not graded hard and all the answers come straight from the book. I will be taking the worksheets up every day so that this will not happen again.

I am Claire Scruggs and I am the new History teacher for 5th and 6th grade. I am originally from Greenville, AL and I graduated from Fort Dale Academy in 2003. I then went to Troy University, where I finished with an Elementary Education Degree in December 2007. This will be my first job as a "real teacher".I am getting married on May 23, 2009.
